Pursuing a PhD at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde

Around 40 to 50 PhD candidates with a variety of university degrees and from different disciplines are currently working at the IOW. The PhD research is integrated into the IOW’s interdisciplinary research programme ‘Perspectives of Coastal Seas’ as well as into one of the five departments: Bioligical Oceanography, Marine Geosciences, Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, and Marine Observations. Doctoral candidates are usually enrolled at one of the two partner universities, Rostock or Greifswald, and will be awarded their doctorate by these institutions. However, doctoral supervision by the IOW in collaboration with other universities is also possible.

The “Guidelines for Doctoral Training and Supervision at the IOW” provide a framework for the structure and organisation of the doctoral phase. Each year, the IOW provides training courses, for example in scientific writing, as part of a Skills Week for doctoral candidates and postdocs. The IOW has PhD candidate´s representatives, a PhD candidates network and a PhD supervisor.
