The DynaDeep research group aims to gain a deeper understanding of the physical and biogeochemical processes occurring in the subsurface of high-energy beaches. A detailed understanding of these processes in what are known as subterranean estuaries is essential for adequately quantifying and predicting material fluxes at the land-sea interface and their impact on coastal ecosystems.
We hypothesize that the subsurface of high-energy beaches is highly dynamic in terms of groundwater flow and transport as well as associated biogeochemical processes, and deviates from conventional modeling assumptions. This unique microbiological habitat likely differs fundamentally from the typically stable subsurface habitats.
DynaDeep will therefore investigate groundwater flow patterns as a function of hydro- and morphodynamic boundary conditions. We will quantify abiotic and biotic turnover rates of organic matter. The speciation and transformation of trace metals and metal isotopes are also subjects of investigation, as are the diversity and functioning of the microbial community. The ultimate goal is to assess the global significance of deep, dynamic biogeochemical reactors in the subsurface of high-energy beaches for coastal ecosystems and global material cycles.
