Dynamics of Mid-latitude / Mediterranean climate during the last 150 ka: Black Sea / Northern Anatolian Paleoen-vironmental Reconstructions

During the first phase marine/limnic sediments from the southern part of the Black Sea as well as stalagmites from Sofular Cave were investigated. They provided excellent paleoenvironmental records of past vegetation dynamics and changing precipitation regimes in the Anatolian hinterland as well as paleoceanographic / paleolimnologic data of environmental changes in the marine / limnic Black Sea system itself during the Holocene, Eem and the last two glacial terminations. In a second phase, we plan to extend our study to additional marine sediment cores, a new set of surface samples from neighboring regions of the Black Sea, and stalagmites in order to get a better understanding of the observed environmental changes on the regional scale. We also plan to introduce modeling aspects on the environmental changes during the studied periods. This will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the far-field effects of North Atlantic climate and Indian monsoon system, the hydrological dynamics in the Black Sea during the glacial terminations 1 and 2 and the anthropogenic / climatic impacts during the Holocene.
