Biodiversity of Benthic Macrofauna

Marine ecologist

The research focuses on analyzing the biodiversity, community structure, and function of benthic macrofauna in the Baltic Sea and other marine regions, as well as investigating natural and anthropogenic factors and biogeographic patterns. Other areas of research include modeling species distribution, mapping marine habitats, analyzing underwater imagery, and analyzing functional indicators and biological traits (Biological Traits Analysis). Particular emphasis is placed on ecosystem processes such as bioturbation and bioirrigation, as well as the impacts of climate change and human activities, particularly bottom trawling.

Dr. Helena Osterholz

Carbon Sequestration

Biogeochemist

I am interested in how organic matter is produced, transported, transformed, and degraded in the ocean, and in the analytical methods that can be used to monitor and account for these processes. Together with Linn, I am working at KOFI on quantifying and characterizing the carbon in Baltic Sea sediments.

Dr. Linn Speidel

Carbon Sequestration

Biogeochemist

Analysis of carbon in the lower water column and in sediment. Determination of the molecular composition and origin of organic carbon. Interpretation of carbon cycles and the effects of changes in the marine environment on the release of organic carbon into the environment.
