In laboratories and workshops: working hand in hand with research
Making progress together!
Our research is the result of team work.
Researchers work together with dedicated engineers, technicians and laboratory assistants who are all deeply invested in their projects.
Working in difficult conditions at sea?
Challenges exist to overcome them. And those challenges do not only exist at sea. Before every journey you need logistical capabilities to store the equipment on board. This can only work if there is close coordination and communication with the ship’s crew and the other teams on board.
The various unanswered questions in marine science and research are driving the development of highly specialised technology. If existing equipment is not up to the task, we need to explore new unconventional approaches. If they lead to inventions, the IOW pays inventors‘ fees and helps to protect their intellectual property.
Chemical or biological laboratory assistants work in the IOW laboratories. They support analytical work using state-of-the-art equipment or work alongside researchers to develop new methodological approaches to complex research questions. They regulraly relocate their workplace to shipboard laboratories such as those on the FS Elsiabeth Mann Borgese. When working in such confined spaces, every move hast o be precise. A strong stomach helps, but even the most seasoned sailor sometimes gets seasick.
