Exploring the sea: undergraduate studies

Research requires knowledge.

The best foundation for this is a degree in the STEM subjects of biology, physics, chemistry or geology. Students can pursue a specialised course of study in marine research at many universities in northern Germany. The website of the German Alliance for Marine Research provides an overview of the various university locations.

Students can support our work as research assistants whilst still studying for their bachelor’s or master’s degree. This gives them a first-hand insight into practical marine research and allows them to play an active role in research projects. Many researchers at the IOW also supervise bachelor’s or master’s theses. Current topics are listed here.
