Application for the Coastal Summer School 2026

We are looking forward to welcome 20 participants at our summer school and invite advanced Master of Science students, PhD students and early-phase postdocs with a background in marine sciences, marine engineering, environmental management or similar.

Course language is English.

Deadline for applications is 31. March 2026

Before you apply for the summer school please read the following points carefully.

Costs:

There is no participation fee charged. Accommodation on Hiddensee island during the summer school is free of charge. Traveling costs and catering costs must be paid by the participants themselves.

Accommodation:

The Biological Station Hiddensee of the University of Greifswald is very nicely located in the western part of the village Kloster on the island Hiddensee. With a short walk you can reach the sandy beach on the west coast of the island as well as the lagoon on the east coast of the island.

Participants will be accommodated in bungalows with two double rooms per bungalow. Therefore two students have to share one room. Every bungalow is equipped with a bathroom. A kitchen house and a seminar house belong to the station and are reserved for our summer school.

Meals:

Daily meals have to be prepared by the participants themselves. Cooking facilities and a dining room are available in a kitchen house. There is a small supermarket in the village, where you can buy food and drinks. Some restaurants serve lunch and dinner.

Infrastructure on the island:

Hiddensee can only be reached by ferry from the island of Rügen (Schaprode) or from Stralsund. Hiddensee is a car-free island, all transport and movement has to be done by foot or by bike on partly unpaved paths. The Summer School includes hiking and biking excursions across the island. Applicants with physical limitations are welcome to contact us in advance to specifically discuss site conditions.

There is a physician on the island, but no pharmacy. Please be aware to bring all medication, which you maybe need regularly, with you.

For application, please send one pdf file, including: a letter of motivation (max. 1500 characters) and a cv. Mandatory information within your document include:
