Technology Transfer
Technologies for marine environmental research
The main goal of IOW´s technology transfer is the implementation of research results in the form of products or processes and to provide a broader user group with new results, technologies and methods.
In this context it is the IOW´s aim to cooperate closely with commercial developers and suppliers. The institute strives for joint acquisition and using of soft money for technological developments and takes advantage of the direct feedback from industry during these research and development projects. For transparency and safeguarding good scientific practice in the course of transfer projects the IOW committed itself to "Guidelines for the treatment of intellectual property".
In order to maintain close contact with industry, the IOW is a member of various associations representing the maritime industry and science.
Information about IOW's successful transfer projects
Gesellschaft für Maritime Technik e.V.
Since 2010 the IOW has been a member of the "German Association for Marine Technology" (GMT) which is a consortium of actors from maritime economy and marine sciences and aims at representing their interests towards public authorities. The GMT includes more than 100 members from all over Germany and is very helpful in establishing new contacts with maritime industry and finding new partners for future cooperation.
Ocean Technology Campus Rostock
In February 2021, the Ocean Technology Campus Rostock (OTC Rostock) was approved as a "future cluster" by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) as part of the ‘Clusters4Future’ competition. Technology developments for the sustainable use of the oceans will be part of the building process of this cluster. It will innovatively combine research, industry and society. The OTC Rostock is a unique research, business and training cluster in the field of underwater technology that pools creative potential and creates structures that promote innovation.
The cluster is currently in its second funding phase (2024-2027).
Subsea Monitoring Network e.V.
SMN e.V. is a platform for the entire value chain of the maritime industry and is committed to strengthening it through active lobbying, networking, and the pooling of information and expertise. As a network for underwater technologies, it is particularly available for questions relating to technological developments and technology testing, and facilitates contact with industry companies, universities, research institutions, testing facilities and test fields, and politicians.
