State and Evolution of the Baltic Sea, 1952-2005

Das Buch fasst die Erkenntnisse zusammen, die aus der Langzeitbeobachtung der Ostsee durch das IOW, seine Vorgängerinstitute sowie Partnereinrichtungen der Nachbarländer in fünf Jahrzehnten seit 1952 gewonnen wurden. Die intersdisziplinäre Darstellung spannt den Bogen von den physikalischen Grundlagen über Wetter und Klima der Ostsee, Eisverhältnisse und Einstromereignisse, Nähr- und Schadstoffe bis zu Plankton und Fisch. Viele Kapitel werden mit detaillierten Beobachtungsdaten unterstützt, die dem Leser vom digitalen Anhang auf CD für eigene Untersuchungen verfügbar sind. Diese Zeitreihen, z.B. zum Klima, zu Temperatur und Salzgehalt der Ostsee oder zu wichtigen Wasserständen reichen zum Teil bis über 100 Jahre zurück. Das Buch konzentriert sich bewusst auf die umfangreichen Messdaten, die oft unter schwierigen Umständen und mit hohem persönlichen und materiellem Einsatz gewonnen wurden, und verzichtet auf Modellrechnungen oder Zukunftsszenarien. Viele Daten, wie der umfangreiche BALTIC-Klima-Atlas oder der Wellenatlas sind hier erstmalig veröffentlicht. Die quantitativen Details der raum-zeitlichen Veränderungen der unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften machen eine Dynamik von Kausalketten und unerwarteten Regimewechseln auf der Zeitskale von Jahrzehnten deutlich, die vielfach unerwartet war, nur in ihrem komplexen Zusammenhang verstanden werden kann, und die Notwendigkeit systematischer langfristiger Beobachtungen unter den Bedingungen des gegenwärtigen Klimawandels unterstreicht.

Assessment of Climate Change for the Baltic Sea Basin

Das "BACC"-Buch publiziert die erste umfassende Bestandsaufnahme zum Klimawandel im Ostseeraum. 80 Wissenschaftler aus 13 europäischen Ländern zeigen unter anderem, dass die Lufttemperaturen im Ostseeraum bis zum Jahr 2100 um bis zu fünf Grad ansteigen könnten.
