Being PhD at IOW

The IOW is a non-university institute, whose professors have their teaching load at the University of Rostock (Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography, and Marine Observations) and University of Greifswald (Marine Geosciences).

As a doctoral student you enrol officially at one of these universities - according to your marine research focus.

PhD representatives at IOW
There is an active group of PhD representatives at IOW. The contacts and activities can be found on the IOW-Intranet.

German language course
According to the PhD regulations of the University of Rostock you also need a certification for German language (i.e. language course). The level of knowledge is not specified.
You can take courses at the Sprachenzentrum of the University of Rostock.

Also the IOW offers German courses during working hours.

Dissertation at the University of Rostock

Semester ticket

After having registered and enroled at the University of Rostock you will receive a semester ticket. The price is per semester and it includes the ticket for the regional public transport in Rostock and throughout Germany (nationwide semesterticket), reduced prices at the canteen (Mensa), etc.
 
 

Application for admission

The IOW is affiliated to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNF) of the University of Rostock.

The faculty has also set up helpful guidelines for the doctoral procedures with all information about regulations, procedures, admission, etc.

Please note that any application for admission to doctoral studies must be submitted before the application for submission of a doctoral thesis.
Please also note that admission to doctoral studies is NOT the same as registration as a doctoral candidate.
